Wachovia Center Renamed Wells Fargo Center
Wachovia Gone From Philly
The Wachovia Center in Philadelphia has a new name: Wells Fargo Center.
Comcast-Spectacor, owner and operator of the venue, announced the name
change July 27. Workers began removing signage July 27 and all new
signage was expected to be in place when Lady Gaga performs the first
of two sold-out shows beginning Sept. 14.
?As the owner and operator of the arena, Comcast-Spectacor is honoring
the contract as it was agreed upon with the bank that the successor
shall keep the naming rights of the facility,? Comcast-Spectacor
President Peter Luukko said in a statement. ?Therefore, we will change
the name of the arena to reflect the name change from Wachovia to
Wells Fargo and continue to operate the arena as the world-class
facility that it has become.?
Wells Fargo acquired the troubled Wachovia last year and the Wachovia
name disappeared.
Although it took a year for the name-change to be reflected in
Philadelphia, it had immediate repercussions for the Wachovia Arena in
Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Venue officials chose not to renew the
$100,000-a-year contract with Wells Fargo and inked a new deal with
Mohegan Sun, which has a casino in the city.
